US OR CHAOS - group exhibition in Belgium

US OR CHAOS

a/political collection
Curated by Becky Haghpanah-Shirwan

22nd September 2018 - 6th January 2019

Musee d'Art de la Province de Hainaut
BPS22 - Boulevard Solvay, 22
B-6000 Charleroi
http://www.bps22.be/en/Exhibitions/US-OR-CHAOS

Under the title US OR CHAOS, the unique a/political private collection on the dual theme of order and chaos is on show at the BPS22. Curated by Becky Haghpanah-Shirwan, director of the a/political collection, US OR CHAOS brings together around forty powerful works that are at times monumental, at times minimalist.

Based in London, the a/political private collection has been built up around relations that it has created with international artists who are used to dealing with today's major political and social problems. In parallel with the acquisition of works, a/political regularly initiates and produces ambitious artistic projects and gets involved in their international dissemination.

Inspired by an anti-riot policeman's retort to a member of the Spanish artists collective Democracia, the exhibition takes a look at control techniques and resistance strategies, attempts to order the chaos and tendencies to challenge the prevailing order with works by Franko B, Erik Bulatov, Democracia, Teresa Margolles, Andrei Molodkin, Petr Pavlensky, Andres Serrano, Santiago Sierra, Kendell Geers and Nancy Spero.

THE HOUSE ON THE LAKE - solo show at the Italian Cultural Institute, London

The house on the lake _ Franko B’s solo
show curated by Lavinia Filippi
14 June – 7 September 2018
39, Belgrave Square - London SW1X 8NX
iiclondra.esteri.it/iic_londra/en/gli_eventi/calendario/the-house-on-the-lake-franko-b.html

The works exhibited in the project room of the ICI in London have been produced recently and include a series of drawings, stitched treads on paper, and a number of sculptures in ceramic. Franko B’s practice is about his experiences and about the world we live in. He works with images that for some reasons got impressed in his mind. They often come from his personal memories or from the news and social media.

The bleeding heart, the simplified shape of a house and the red cross are recurrent symbols in Franko’s practice, they tell about his childhood in an orphanage run by the Italian Red Cross, about his quest for love and stability, and about his passion for art and for life. The series of Lost boys are small size human-shaped ceramics that reflect on human condition and diversity; and explore the possibility of creating alternative communities.

Franko B’s work is about control, regardless of form and genre; control over one’s body and over one’s own life, against labels and rules that corrupt or commodify freedom. In a special series of work deploying flags and monuments, Franko B transfigures this concept into a narrative, reflecting on political constellations, institutions and powerholders that penetrate human lives, our behavior, our reality, our vulnerability and sexuality.

Franko B is an extraordinary, internationally acclaimed artist who has been making drawings, installations, sculptures, and performances for over 30 years. Because of Love tells the story of his childhood in Italy in an orphanage and at the hands of his abusive family, his journey to London as a young man, his return to Italy many years later as an accomplished artist, and, in between, the story of his life and loves and his becoming an artist.

Please join us for a special Valentine’s Day event to mark the launch of the publication and to celebrate Franko’s birthday. The evening will feature contributions from Franko B, Marcia Farquhar and Dominic Johnson. Drinks and cake will be served.

BECAUSE OF LOVE: Franko B's Story

BECAUSE OF LOVE: Franko B's Story will be released on 14th February 2018.

Available to pre-order from Unbound >

Written by Franko B, edited by Lois Keidan and Megan Vaughan, with a preface by Tim Etchells, designed by David Caines, illustrated by Giuditta Fullone.

ISBN: 978-0-9935611-5-3 Published by Live Art Development Agency, 2018 164 pages, paperback with colour illustrations throughout
“Franko B’s was a painful, unavoidably compromised childhood - a tale in which the calm and quiet features of a family have fled, and he is dropped into a future that he had to forge for himself. Stolen from a conventional destiny, his body rises to become a glorious body - a body of art. It is also an eternal body, since there is a bond between the physical body and the art body. This is the condition of his freedom”.
 - Francesca Alfano Miglietti (FAM), curator, writer, art historian
